Paris Pineyro, who performs as Paris Dior, is a sophomore studying music business/management and performance.
Two of the most influential names in American music, Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole, are now supporting the next generation of musical talent. Berklee College of Music has announced the recipient of its inaugural Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole Scholarship, honoring the pioneering spirit and artistic excellence of the legendary father-daughter duo.
The prestigious award has been granted to Paris Pineyro, a second-year student at Berklee who performs under the artist name Paris Dior. The scholarship, valued at $75,000, is designed to help young artists further their education and careers, carrying the Cole family's remarkable legacy forward.
A Tribute to Crossover Icons
The scholarship was established to celebrate what would have been Natalie Cole's 75th birthday this year, honoring her legacy of artistic excellence, commitment to philanthropy, and her Grammy-winning career as a singer, songwriter, and actor. It simultaneously recognizes the enduring influence of Nat King Cole, whose smooth style and crossover appeal broke ground for generations of African American artists and shaped the landscape of American popular music.
Paris Pineyro, originally from Cranston, Rhode Island, is pursuing a dual major in music business/management and performance. Her academic focus reflects the multi-faceted careers of the Coles, who navigated both the creative and commercial sides of the music industry.
Perseverance and Purpose
Upon receiving the award, Pineyro shared that the scholarship represents not only professional recognition but a personal affirmation of her journey.
"This represents every late night, every struggle, and every moment I pushed through my doubts,” Pineyro said. She added that the award is a powerful reminder that "even when the path feels impossible, perseverance can lead to something truly 'unforgettable,' to quote the iconic Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole.”
Pineyro expressed deep gratitude to the Natalie Cole Foundation and Nat King Cole Generation Hope for believing in her potential and investing in her future.
The Cole family views the partnership with Berklee as a way to actively uphold the legacies of Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole. Casey and Timolin Cole, Natalie's twin sisters and Nat King Cole's daughters, spoke about the profound impact of music.
"Establishing the Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole Scholarship at Berklee College of Music is especially meaningful because it is a place where so many young artists find their voice," they said. "We see this partnership as a way to uphold our father and sister's belief in the power of music to educate, uplift, and unite."
Phil Lima, assistant chair of Berklee's Voice Department, echoed the sentiment, noting the scholarship "opens more doors for Paris to further advance her education and her career." The scholarship ensures that the next generation of musical leaders will have the resources to keep the legendary influence of the Cole family alive.
