Houston Arts Alliance gala raises more than $600,000, honors Debbie Allen and H-E-B.

The arts have long played a vital role in shaping Houston’s cultural identity, and this year’s gala hosted by Houston Arts Alliance demonstrated the community’s continued commitment to supporting that creative spirit. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the organization’s The Gilded & Golden Gala brought together artists, philanthropists, business leaders, and supporters for an evening that raised more than $600,000 in gross revenue to benefit Houston’s arts community.
Held at the Thompson Houston, the annual fundraising event honored legendary performer and arts educator Debbie Allen and longtime community supporter H-E-B, while showcasing the talent and resilience that continue to define Houston’s cultural landscape.
Celebrating Two Decades of Arts Leadership
As the City of Houston’s local arts agency, Houston Arts Alliance plays a central role in supporting the region’s creative ecosystem. The nonprofit administers city-funded arts grants, oversees public art initiatives, manages the City of Houston Civic Art Collection, and leads cultural planning efforts that bring together public, private, and philanthropic investment.
Funds raised during the gala will help support a range of programs, including:
Artist-centered initiatives
Arts resilience and recovery efforts
Community engagement programs
Cultural advocacy and data initiatives
Emerging needs across Houston’s arts sector
According to the organization, private fundraising is critical to sustaining this work alongside its public programs and partnerships with the City of Houston.
Honoring a Cultural Icon
One of the evening’s highlights was the presentation of the Golden Trailblazer Award to Debbie Allen, the Houston-born performer, director, choreographer, and educator whose career has earned her five Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, a Kennedy Center Honor, and an honorary Oscar.
To celebrate her legacy, Harrison Guy and Urban Souls Dance Company delivered a moving performance combining dance and spoken word, paying tribute to Allen’s lifelong impact on the performing arts and arts education.
Recognizing Corporate Commitment to the Arts
The gala also recognized H-E-B as the organization’s Community Legacy Honoree, honoring the company’s continued investment in Houston’s creative community and its support of Houston Arts Alliance.
The recognition underscored the important role that corporate partnerships play in strengthening cultural institutions and ensuring artists have the resources they need to thrive.
An Evening of Powerful Performances
Throughout the evening, guests were treated to performances that highlighted the diversity and depth of Houston’s creative talent.
Houston poet Bella Kalra, whose artistic journey was nurtured through Writers in the Schools (WITS), delivered a spoken-word performance that illustrated the importance of arts education and mentorship. Grants administered by Houston Arts Alliance have helped support WITS in connecting professional writers with Houston youth.
The program concluded with a performance by Grammy Award-winning artist Kam Franklin, who sang “Fame” in tribute to Allen’s iconic portrayal of Lydia Grant.
Investing in Houston’s Creative Future
With nearly 470 guests in attendance, the gala demonstrated the broad support that exists for Houston’s arts community.
Reflecting on the milestone event, Taylor Jackson, CEO of Houston Arts Alliance, described the evening as a celebration of the artists, organizations, and supporters who continue to strengthen Houston’s cultural landscape.
As the organization enters its next chapter, the funds raised through The Gilded & Golden Gala will help ensure Houston’s creative community remains vibrant, resilient, and equipped to inspire future generations.
