OFFICIAL TRAILER: Click to Watch

The Emmy-winning Secrets of franchise is back, and this time, it's going small. Secrets of the Bees, the fifth installment in the beloved series, has just dropped its trailer, and it promises to be one of the most visually stunning and scientifically eye-opening nature documentaries in recent memory. Premiering on National Geographic on March 31 at 8/7c, with both episodes streaming on Disney+ and Hulu on April 1, this two-part series is set to kick off Earth Month in a big way.
Bertie Gregory Returns, This Time, He's Going Inside the Hive
Hosting and narrating the series is BAFTA and Emmy-winning National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory, who previously wowed audiences with Secrets of the Penguins in 2025. Gregory has built a reputation for making viewers feel like they're right alongside him in the wild, and Secrets of the Bees takes that intimacy to an entirely new level.
To bring the hidden world of the hive to life, Gregory used a probe lens, a wide-angle macro lens, that captures not just the bees themselves but the entire environment surrounding them. The result? Never-before-filmed moments inside a working hive, filmed over three years, that reveal the extraordinary complexity of bee life in breathtaking detail.
"It's very easy for people to connect with a bear or a wolf, because they're big and charismatic," Gregory explained, "but with bees, it's more difficult." His solution was to get closer than anyone had before.
The Science Behind the Series
Joining Gregory is Dr. Samuel Ramsey, entomologist and fellow National Geographic Explorer, whose expertise helps decode the remarkable architecture and intelligence on display throughout the series. Together, they explore what makes bees far more than just pollinators.
With over 20,000 bee species responsible for pollinating roughly a third of the world's food supply, the stakes couldn't be higher, and the series doesn't shy away from that reality.
The two episodes each take a distinct angle: The Hive follows the life of a single bee as her colony races to prepare for winter, while The Pollinators examines the threats facing bee populations worldwide and what humanity can do to help them survive.
James Cameron on Why Bees Matter
Executive producer James Cameron, who also helmed Secrets of the Penguins, put it plainly: "Far more than pollinators, bees are socially complex, fast-thinking individuals and the most important insects on our planet. Their impact on the natural world and humanity is immeasurable, and we're only just beginning to see how extraordinary they truly are."
The series is produced by Silverback Films, the award-winning production company behind Our Planet, Wild Isles, and multiple Disneynature features, with Cameron and Maria Wilhelm of Lightstorm Earth serving as executive producers alongside National Geographic's Pam Caragol.
The Perfect Earth Month Watch
Secrets of the Bees will anchor National Geographic's Earth Month 2026 initiative, part of a global storytelling push designed to inspire audiences to connect with, and commit to protecting, the natural world.
Whether you're a lifelong nature enthusiast or someone who's never given bees a second thought, this series offers a rare and stunning window into a world that's been buzzing right under our noses the whole time.
Tune in March 31 on National Geographic, or stream April 1 on Disney+ and Hulu.
