April is Earth Month, and Natural Grocers is marking the occasion the way it does every year, with ladybugs, pledges, and a genuine push to put money behind regenerative organic farming. The grocer's annual Ladybug Love campaign is back for 2026, running the entire month of April in partnership with the Rodale Institute, one of the country's most respected names in organic agriculture research.

It's a campaign that manages to be both charmingly simple and meaningfully substantive. At its heart, it asks shoppers to commit to one thing: stop using chemicals that harm ladybugs and other beneficial insects in their homes, yards, and gardens. That's the pledge. But the ripple effects of that pledge, and the fundraising attached to it, reach much further.

What's at Stake

The Rodale Institute has spent nearly eight decades making the scientific case for organic farming. This year's Ladybug Love fundraising will go specifically toward the Institute's Farmer Training Programs, intensive, hands-on programs that prepare the next generation of farmers for careers in regenerative organic crop and vegetable production. The focus is on building healthy soil, advancing organic practices, and creating a more resilient food system from the ground up.

Natural Grocers has set a goal of raising $100,000 for these programs throughout April.

How You Can Get Involved

There are several ways customers can participate, starting with simply signing the Ladybug Love pledge at naturalgrocers.com/ladybuglove. For every pledge made during April, Natural Grocers will donate $1 to Rodale Institute, up to $25,000. Customers can also donate directly at the register in increments of $1, $5, or $10, and every Ladybug Zip Pouch sold throughout the month triggers a $2 donation.

For {N}power members, Natural Grocers' free loyalty program, there are added incentives. Members who make or renew their pledge between April 1 and 15 will receive $5 off a purchase during April 22–24. On those same three days, which coincide with Natural Grocers' Earth Day event, {N}power members will also receive a free limited-edition reusable bag and sticker with any purchase.

A Little Easter Egg Hunt for Good Measure

For those who enjoy a friendly challenge, the April edition of Natural Grocers' Health Hotline magazine (Vol. 105) has ladybugs hidden throughout its pages. Count them correctly, fill out the form, and drop it off at any store by April 25 for a chance to win a $500 Natural Grocers gift card.

The Bigger Picture

It would be easy to dismiss a campaign centered on ladybugs as seasonal window dressing. But Natural Grocers has been running Ladybug Love as an annual tradition for a reason, it connects the everyday choices shoppers make (buying organic, skipping pesticides) to a larger movement that depends on training real farmers and restoring real soil.

As Raquel Isely, Natural Grocers' VP of Marketing, put it, the campaign is about shared responsibility, caring for the land, protecting biodiversity, and investing in the people who grow our food.

That's worth a pledge.
