Ouster and FieldAI Are Teaming Up to Put Smarter Robots in the World's Toughest Workplaces

Most robots are good at doing specific things in controlled environments. The real world, construction sites, mining operations, energy facilities, GPS-denied underground spaces, is something else entirely. It's unpredictable, unmapped, and unforgiving. And it's precisely where the most dangerous and difficult human work takes place.
That's the problem Ouster and FieldAI are tackling together.
The two companies announced a collaboration this week that pairs Ouster's Rev8 digital lidar, the company's most advanced sensing hardware, with FieldAI's universal robot intelligence platform to scale autonomous perception in the complex, unstructured environments that have historically defeated robotic systems. For industries like construction, mining, energy, manufacturing, security, and government, the implications are significant.
Two Technologies Built for the Hard Cases
FieldAI's approach to robotics starts with a fundamental premise: most of the world's physical work happens in places that are too unpredictable for conventional robots to navigate. Their answer is what they call Field Foundation Models™, a novel AI architecture that combines data-driven intelligence with physics-based reasoning and uncertainty awareness. The result is a universal robot "brain" that works across radically different robot types and tasks, allowing machines to be introduced to a new site the way a new employee would be, with no prior maps, no pre-planned routes, no supporting infrastructure, and no modifications to the environment required.
That's a meaningful departure from how most industrial robotics deployments work today. And it requires sensing hardware that can match the ambition.
Ouster's Rev8 digital lidar brings native color capability, high-precision sensing, and the rugged build quality that safety-critical industrial environments demand. FieldAI already uses Ouster lidar to help robots navigate complex, unmapped, and GPS-denied settings, the Rev8 collaboration deepens that integration with more advanced capabilities as FieldAI scales deployments with large industrial customers.
Andrew Mullen, Head of Hardware at FieldAI, was direct about why the sensor matters: "Ouster Rev8's ruggedness, performance, and native color are helping FieldAI deliver next-generation physical AI solutions for industrial customers where it matters most, in the field."
The Safety Dimension
One of the most important aspects of this collaboration is its focus on safety and interpretability, not just performance. In industries where workers operate heavy machinery, navigate hazardous terrain, and work in environments with serious injury risk, deploying autonomous systems without ironclad safety assurances isn't an option.
The enhanced sensing capabilities of Rev8, combined with FieldAI's uncertainty-aware AI architecture, are designed to give enterprise customers the confidence that autonomous systems are operating safely even when conditions change unpredictably. That's a prerequisite for adoption in regulated, safety-critical industries, and it's where both companies are focused.
Cyrille Jacquemet, Chief Revenue Officer at Ouster, framed the partnership's ambition clearly: "FieldAI's new class of foundation models offers the reliability and adaptability required for autonomous robotics deployment at scale. We are thrilled to leverage our new Rev8 digital lidar to power the next generation of industrial autonomy."
FieldAI has raised over $400 million from investors including Bezos Expeditions, NVIDIA's venture arm NVentures, and Khosla Ventures, a funding base that reflects serious conviction in where autonomous field robotics is headed. With Ouster's sensing technology now integrated at the hardware level, the path from promising technology to production-scale deployment just got more concrete.
The world's hardest workplaces are about to get smarter help.
