Doubtless Q3 Pet Parent Insights.

For many people, pets have long been considered members of the family. But new research suggests their influence extends far beyond companionship. According to the latest Q3 Pet Parent Insights from Doubtless, pets are playing an increasingly important role in some of life’s biggest decisions, including where people live, how they plan financially, and how they approach long-term healthcare.

The findings, which draw from consumer research and insights across the Doubtless portfolio, including Pumpkin, Spot Pet Insurance, and Embrace Pet Insurance, highlight the growing importance of pets in modern households.

The report also comes as pet healthcare continues to gain momentum. According to the 2026 NAPHIA State of the Industry Report, North America now has more than 7.6 million insured pets, representing growth of more than 8% since 2024.

Pets Are Influencing Where People Live

One of the report’s most striking findings is the role pets now play in housing decisions.

According to consumer data from Spot Pet Insurance, 58% of pet owners said their pet’s needs carried as much weight as their own when choosing a home. In many cases, pets have become a deciding factor rather than merely a consideration.

The data also revealed that:

  • 75% of pet owners would walk away from an otherwise ideal property if breed or weight restrictions prevented them from keeping their pet.

  • 34% have permanently modified their homes to better accommodate their animals.

These findings reflect how deeply integrated pets have become in household planning and lifestyle decisions.

Long-Term Financial Planning Is Changing

Pet ownership is also influencing how people think about their financial futures.

The report found that 42% of pet owners would consider delaying retirement if it meant they could better support an aging pet’s medical care and quality of life. Additionally, 41% plan to designate funds or assets specifically for their pets as part of their estate planning efforts.

These numbers suggest that pet-related financial planning is moving beyond routine expenses and becoming part of broader wealth and retirement strategies.

As veterinary care continues to advance, many pet owners are increasingly preparing for future healthcare costs in the same way they plan for other major family obligations.

Preventive Care Becomes a Higher Priority

The research also points to growing interest in preventive healthcare for pets.

According to the report, pet parents are placing greater emphasis on wellness, early intervention, and long-term health planning. However, affordability remains a challenge for many households seeking routine veterinary care.

Programs focused on preventive healthcare and wellness services are helping make routine care more accessible and predictable, allowing owners to address potential health concerns before they become more serious or expensive.

The Human-Pet Bond Continues to Deepen

According to Dirk Beeckman, Global CEO of Doubtless, pets are no longer simply companions. Instead, they are increasingly central to how families make important life decisions. Whether selecting a home, budgeting for the future, or prioritizing healthcare, pet owners are making choices that reflect the growing importance of their animals within the family structure.

This shift highlights a broader cultural trend in which pets are viewed not just as animals but as lifelong family members whose needs influence daily life and long-term planning.

New Era of Pet Parenthood

The latest findings reveal that pet ownership is becoming increasingly intertwined with major personal and financial decisions. From housing and retirement planning to healthcare and estate preparation, today’s pet parents are making choices that reflect the significant role animals play in their lives.

As pet ownership continues to evolve, businesses across healthcare, insurance, housing, and financial services may need to adapt to a new reality: pets are no longer on the sidelines of decision-making. For millions of families, they are helping guide some of life’s most important choices.
