In a move underscoring its commitment to operational excellence and cultural alignment, SPB Hospitality—a major operator of full-service and quick-service dining restaurants—has announced the promotion of Ryan Russell to the pivotal role of Chief of Staff.

Joining the ranks of senior leadership, Russell will now report directly to Chairman and CEO G.J. Hart. His new mandate is expansive, focusing on enhancing cross-functional collaboration, strengthening company culture, and driving strategic initiatives across SPB’s diverse brand portfolio, which includes favorites like Logan’s Roadhouse, J. Alexander’s, and Stoney River Steakhouse & Grill.

A Proven Track Record Built on Operational Roots

Russell, who first joined SPB Hospitality in 2021, brings a robust and uniquely well-rounded background to the Chief of Staff role. His career ascent within the company has been rapid, having most recently served as Senior Director of Communications and Marketing.

However, his expertise stretches far beyond corporate communications. Russell’s operational history covers restaurant, hotel, and event management, giving him a rare, holistic view of the hospitality landscape—from back-of-house logistics to front-of-house guest experience. This on-the-ground knowledge is precisely what SPB needs to ensure that corporate strategy translates effectively into flawless daily execution across its many locations.

CEO G.J. Hart praised Russell’s distinct qualifications: “Ryan brings a unique combination of operational expertise and a deep commitment to our team members and guests... In his new role as Chief of Staff, Ryan will continue to oversee PR and corporate communications while expanding his focus on internal communications, culture and cross-brand alignment, ensuring our restaurants and teams are empowered to deliver exceptional guest experiences and operational excellence every day.”

Elevating Culture and Community Impact

While culture and strategic alignment will be primary focuses, Russell's new position will also formalize his successful work in the realm of purpose and community engagement. Throughout his tenure, he has been a driving force behind SPB's corporate responsibility efforts, notably through the HOPE Program. Furthermore, he has successfully expanded the brand’s cause marketing footprint to include meaningful initiatives with organizations like Gift A Meal and K9s for Warriors .

In his expanded role, Russell will work closely with the leadership team to ensure the company's People and operational strategies are harmonized across all concepts, from fine dining at Stoney River to casual concepts like Logan's Roadhouse.

“My career with SPB has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue contributing to a company that prioritizes people and purpose,” said Russell. “I look forward to partnering with our leadership team to advance our strategic priorities and continue building programs that make our brands some of the best in the industry.”

Russell’s impact has not gone unnoticed by the wider industry, as evidenced by his recognition in 2024 as one of FSR Magazine’s 40 Under 40 Rising Stars, an honor that specifically cited his contributions to communications, community engagement, and operational excellence. This promotion confirms Russell as a rising star within the leadership of modern hospitality.
